The Blinding Knife by Brent Weeks : Review

Gavin Guile has five years to live, five great purposes left and one huge problem.

War is spreading across the land, engulfing satrapies, and with the Color Prince gaining strength every day. Gavin must protect his secret more than ever before and save his people from chaos, as well as prepare the Chromeria that many will not survive.

Kip, training to join the Blackguards must overcome circumstances and prejudice layered upon him for being the Prism’s bastard son. Set shortly after the events of the Black Prism, The Blinding Knife continues the adventure with Gavin having thousands of refugees in need of a home after the aftermath of the Color Prince taking control of one of the nations formerly part of the Seven Satrapies,

The Blinding Knife by Brent Weeks is the best book I’ve read this year. Action packed, riveting and filled with secrets, Weeks continues a tale of epic proportions. The Blinding Knife builds upon the foundations that were set in the Black Prism — expanding on the government of the Chromeria and the expanses of magic. Delving as well into the darker side of power, and the price that must be paid.

Weeks’ does a good job with showing the character growth and the dynamics of relationships between the characters, as well as exploring their interactions in realistic circumstances, bringing them to life with the aid of the elegantly detailed descriptions. While not as centred around twists and surprises as The Black Prism was, it offers resolutions to some that were seen in the first book. The resolution of one of the main ones from Book 1 was a bit anti-climatic and somewhat of a let down, however it still read in a realistic manner.

Reader’s of Weeks’ Night Angel Trilogy, and the Black Prism will not be disappointed by this latest instalment in The Lightbringer series which will leave you wanting for more.
Book 3 — The Blood Mirror is set to be released sometime in 2013.
